I am the author, co-author, editor, or co-editor of numerous articles, chapters, and books in my fields of expertise. Most of my published articles and chapters are available through ResearchGate and Academia.edu. My books are available for purchase via the usual on-line bookstores like Amazon.com. The subject categories below contain complete references, and in some cases links, to my published work.
Corrections
My research in the area of corrections has focused on: explaining prison and prisoner re-entry to popular audiences and providing advice that will assist prisoners, soon to be prisoners, and their loved ones to succeed once released; the co-founding of the Convict Criminology “School” of Criminology (an approach that stresses retrospective autoethnography); understanding the normalization of the Carceral/Shadow Carceral State; and the identification of the major challenges facing the field of corrections, analysing solutions, and developing better policies and practices. This work has included a handful of books including my edited, The Globalization of Supermax Prisons (Rutgers University Press, 2013) that was designated as 2013 Choice Outstanding Academic Title.

Policing
In the field of policing, I have examined the challenges facing police departments operating in both western and non-western communities; how incidents of police violence/excessive force come to public attention, and whether this sets an agenda for the police organization to change; and the myths of community policing. In addition to writing Making News of Police Violence: A Comparative Study of Toronto and New York City (Praeger, 2000), which led to me being awarded the Society for the Study of Social Problems, Crime and Juvenile Delinquency Division Outstanding Scholar Award, 2001/2002, I authored Policing Issues: Challenges and Controversies (Jones and Bartlett, 2011).

Political Crime, State Crime, and Crimes of the Powerful
My earliest and most cited research is in the field of oppositional political terrorism (OPT). I have specialized in the causal dynamics of OPT. One of my major accomplishments, using quantitative research, was developing the first database on terrorism in Canada (i.e., Attributes of Terrorism in Canada), which was later acquired by the Solicitor General of Canada. This research led me to be the lead expert witness for the Senate of Canada’s Special Committee on Terrorism and Public Safety (1986). This source of data, along with other supplementary data sets I developed, was used in a series of well-cited quantitative research studies I conducted during the late 1980s and early 1990s.
I am also a recognized leader in the analysis of state crime (i.e., corruption, human rights violations, state-corporate crime, war crimes, genocide, etc.). The bulk of my research has focused on the problem of controlling state crime. This has led to two edited books: Controlling Sate Crime: An Introduction, (Ross, 1995d/2000) and Varieties of State Crime and Its Control (Ross, 2000a). In recent years this scholarship has morphed into looking into controls against crimes of the powerful (i.e., elites, organized crime groups, religious organizations, organized crime, and states).

American Indians/Native Americans
Due to a unique set of circumstances, I have conducted research and published in the area of crime and justice in American Indian communities. Part of this work led me to co-edit a book Native Americans and the Criminal Justice System (Paradigm Publishers, 2006). I also edited a handbook entitled Americans Indians at Risk (ABC-CLIO, 2014), which examines not only contemporary crime and justice issues, but matters of health, and educational disparities, along with economic challenges of American Indians. In 2015, this book won the designation “Outstanding Reference Source,” from the Reference and User Services Association, part of the American Library Association. Below is a list of research I have conducted in this area.
